If you are like many women, your morning ritual includes the application of a variety of hygiene and cosmetic products. It probably has not occurred to you that those product contain literally thousands of dangerous chemicals, and you are applying them directly to your body.
These seven chemicals are among the worst offenders:
Parabens are in approximately 90 percent of American shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, shaving cream and toothpaste products. They are the most frequently used preservatives in cosmetic and hygiene products. In Europe, however, many parabens are prohibited.
European authorities cite the adverse effects of parabens on human health. They penetrate skin and disrupt hormones. They have been found in the tumors of 100 percent of breast cancer patients.
The word is unpronounceable, but phthalates make cosmetic products soft. As an example, they are added to nail polish to keep it from become brittle. It is also present in lip gloss, eyeliners, blushes, deodorants and hair products. Research shows phthalates accumulate in human cells, raising the risk of cancer and reproductive defects. A study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) showed every participant in the test had traces of phthalates in their bodies – probably from these products.
Chemists who create cosmetics have devised a way for formaldehyde to be released gradually as a preservative, with the assistance of chemicals like quaternium-15. This turns these products, that you rely on to enhance your beauty, into toxic sludge. Formaldehyde is an established carcinogen, which raises the risk of ALS, depression, insomnia and ADHD.
4. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid
People usually shorten the name of this chemical to EDTA. EDTA is a preservative used in skin care, bath soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair dye and bleach products. Chronic use of EDTA has the potential to cause kidney damage, reproductive damage, and fetal damage.
5. Propylene Glycol
The Material Safety Data Sheet for propylene glycol warns you to keep this chemical out of contact with skin. Nevertheless, costmetic companies use it in lotions. It can cause contact dermatitis, mutate cell membranes and inhibit skin growth.
Toluene is made from the tolu tree, but it doesn’t sustain its natural form. Instead, it is added to gasoline and used to blend other chemicals. It is frequently used in nail treatment products. It is known to cause severe skin and lung irritation, and damage to the kidneys, liver and central nervous system. It has been implicated in brain damage and birth defects.
Toluene begins its life in the tolu tree. It doesn’t stay natural for long, though; for commercial use, it’s added to gasoline and used to blend other chemicals. This chemical is often used in nail treatment products.
Women have been daubing on talcum powder for centuries. Unfortunately, it often contains asbestos, which is carcinogenic, and health researchers now suspect talk itself causes cancer. Talk is also in lotion, eye shadow, foundation, lipstick and deodorant. It is even in baby products.
So what is the answer? Do your research, and find organic products that do not contain these health time bombs.
