5 Tips for Healthy, Beautiful Skin

SkinLovely women know health and beauty go hand in hand. Our skin is the largest organ of our body, and it reflects the state of our internal health. Dewy, glowing skin is a product of good self-care, but it doesn’t have to take a lot of time or money.

Here are five things you can do to ensure healthy, beautiful skin.

1. Protect yourself from the sun.

The single best thing you can do for your skin is to protect it from sun damage. Too much sun can cause wrinkles and ages spots, and increases the risk of skin cancer. Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply it generously, and reapply it every two hours. Stay out of midday sun, and wear protective clothing.

2. Don’t smoke.

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. It narrows the small blood vessels in the top layers of skin, decreasing blood flow. This deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients that nourish the epidermis. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin, the fibers that keep skin flexible. As they age, heavy smokers are recognizable by their wrinkled, leathery skin.

3. Treat your skin gently.

Although we often take it for granted, skin is fragile. Hot water and lengthy baths and showers remove the oils from your skin. Use warm water, and limit your shower time. Use mild cleansers, then pat dry your skin gently with a towel leaving a little moisture. If your skin is dry, use a good moisturizer.

4. Maintain a healthy diet.

Eat six or seven servings every day of fruits and vegetables. Stick with whole grains and lean proteins. Research suggests a diet rich in vitamin C and low in processed or refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats can minimize your risk of acne and help your skin look younger.

5. Manage your stress.

Stress is one of the least recognized health risk factors, and stress takes a toll on your skin. We cannot control everything in life, but we can set reasonable boundaries, minimize our to-do lists, and make time to do the things we enjoy.

Implement these five things, and you may be surprised at the dramatic results in your beautiful, healthy skin.
